STRATEGIC OUTCOMES FROM THE FOURTH FISHGOV2 PROJECT STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING
The Fourth Steering Committee Meeting of the Fisheries Governance Project – Phase 2, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on December 6, 2024, concluded with several critical recommendations to enhance the project’s implementation and impact. Members emphasized the importance of initiating a third phase to build on the achievements of FishGov 2 and sustain its momentum. Participants also called for greater efforts to promote private-sector investment in aquaculture development, recognizing its potential to drive innovation, boost productivity, and generate employment opportunities.
The Fourth Steering Committee Meeting of the Fisheries Governance Project – Phase 2, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on December 6, 2024, concluded with several critical recommendations to enhance the project’s implementation and impact. Members emphasized the importance of initiating a third phase to build on the achievements of FishGov 2 and sustain its momentum. The need to increase funding for Regional Aquatic Animal Health Networks was highlighted to strengthen aquatic health management across the continent. Participants also called for greater efforts to promote private-sector investment in aquaculture development, recognizing its potential to drive innovation, boost productivity, and generate employment opportunities. Capacity-building emerged as another key focus area, with recommendations to organize training workshops and enhance the ability of AU Member States to effectively utilize fisheries and aquaculture data for strategic decision-making. Additionally, accelerating the financial execution of project activities was deemed essential for ensuring timely and efficient implementation. The meeting, attended by 40 representatives from Regional Economic Communities, AU Member States, Regional Fisheries Bodies, and development partners, reaffirmed the transformative potential of FishGov 2 in fostering sustainable fisheries and aquaculture management. Dr. Godfrey Bahiigwa, Director of the AUC-DARD, highlighted the initiative’s critical role, while representatives from the FAO Regional Office for Africa and the EU Delegation to the African Union underscored its strategic importance. Permanent Secretaries from countries such as Egypt, Cote d’Ivoire, Uganda, and Cameroon also emphasized the project’s contribution to shaping a sustainable future for Africa’s fisheries sector.
